Buying a trailer without carefully considering the towing capacity of the tow vehicle can be a big mistake, as evidenced in this posting from the RVtravel.com forum. After reading the posting below, click on the link to read what some savvy readers suggested as the solution to the RVer’s problem:
We have managed to get ourselves in a fix. We are new to RVing and now are super confused. We bought a 1977 Shasta 28′ travel trailer. The dry weight according to the title is 4,100 pounds. I understand that is a stripped down version so I am going to estimate that by the time Suzy Homemaker is done with it, it will weigh 6,000 pounds.
When we bought the trailer, we were figuring on using my father-in-law’s truck which is an ‘04 Chevy Silverado V6. On our first trip around the block (we live in the country), we found that it was not strong enough to handle it. We had to floor it just to get it up to 50. We went straight back home.
Now we have to buy a new truck and am worried about what to get. We have a trip planned in two weeks. I want to buy new Ford. Can anyone tell me what model and engine size I should be looking for? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks for looking and have a great day! — Charlie
